Bridging Medicine, Culture and Art: The Pure Vision Behind Professor Tinly Wong’s Fifteen-Year Tibetan Chronicle

Curated and facilitated by SORTIE Agency, this exclusive collaboration between GQ Hong Kong and Professor Tinly Wong Tin-chee, founder of Herbalgy, practitioner of Chinese medicine and visionary image-maker, bridges three distinct fields: medicine, culture and art, bringing this body of work to the international stage at Art Basel.

In an age where the world is captured in an instant and forgotten in a scroll, the act of patient looking has become a rare discipline. For fifteen years, Professor Tinly Wong has carried an 8×10 large-format wooden camera across the Tibetan Plateau. Through thousands of sheets of black-and-white film, traversing Qinghai, Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu and Tibet, he has quietly documented the people and way of life of this highland world.

Professor Wong’s singular contribution across medicine, culture and the arts was recognised when GQ Hong Kong honoured him with the ‘Local Hero’ award at the GQ Hong Kong Men of the Year Awards 2025. For GQ, his fifteen-year Tibetan chronicle represents not merely a personal artistic journey, but a cultural and artistic archive of profound value. United by a shared reverence for the philosophy of Purity, SORTIE Agency facilitated this collaboration, bringing together GQ Hong Kong and Professor Wong to present his fifteen-year visual archive in its entirety for the first time, through a documentary film and a photographic monograph.

Two Works: Photobook and Documentary, Revealed in Full

This collaboration has given rise to two core works:

Photobook: A TRIBUTE TO NATURE, CULTURE AND HUMANITY

This volume gathers the striking black-and-white images captured through Professor Wong’s 8×10 large-format camera, structured in three movements – FESTIVAL, LIFE, CULTURE. Each photograph bears the mark of time: time spent composing, time spent waiting for the light. In an era of rapid consumption, these images invite us back to a slower, more intentional way of seeing. The photobook features an afterword by Sarah Greene, Founder and Director of Hong Kong’s esteemed Blue Lotus Gallery, who describes Professor Wong’s fifteen-year journey as ‘a deliberate commitment’, an act of holding the weight of time.

Documentary: Let Purity Endure

Produced by the GQ Hong Kong team, the documentary follows Professor Wong as he returns to the Tibetan Plateau, revisiting dozens of locations he first photographed years ago. The lens captures not only the region’s majestic landscapes, but the quiet, authentic interactions between people and land, and the warmth of reunions with old friends met across decades. In the film, Professor Wong reflects: ‘Stepping into their lives, I came to understand that what people truly need is often not complex medical intervention, but the most immediate, everyday care.’ This realisation has become the very core of what Purity means to him.

Art Basel Hong Kong: A Vision Enters the International Stage

The photobook will be released in a limited edition at the GQ Hong Kong exhibition space during Art Basel Hong Kong 2026, with a private reception on the eve of the fair to formally introduce Professor Wong’s work. As one of the world’s most significant contemporary art platforms, Art Basel offers a fitting stage for this fifteen-year archive from the Tibetan Plateau to enter the global cultural and artistic dialogue.

For the wider public, the March issue of GQ Hong Kong will include a limited-edition photographic supplement, an invitation to hold these pure images from the plateau, to turn their pages, to let silence in.

The Meaning of a Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

For SORTIE Agency, the value of this project lies in bringing together three seemingly distinct fields, medicine, culture and art, united by the thread of Purity. Professor Wong’s work behind the camera and his founding of Herbalgy share the same ethos: to respond to human need in the most direct and simplest way possible.

In a world of increasing complexity, this project invites us to rediscover a simple truth: the most lasting value often comes from the most essential origins.
